There’s so many amazing places to wonder around in the historic part of downtown Charleston SC. I really love this city, for the variety there is to be found. These images above are a few from the portrait session in downtown Charleston. This was a self assignment to demonstrate the use of a single, off-camera bare bulb flash, with the Canon 5D during the mid-afternoon sunlight. Looking at the images, you’d have no idea it was actually a lot brighter than seen in the images. The main goal with using the off camera flash during the day light hours was to demonstrate how to introduce darkness into the image. There’s nothing more exciting than creating texture with light and dark. Added with color, shapes and expressions. The image will convey a story to the viewer.

I love setting up self assignments, as it give’s me the opportunity to explore ideas I form during life’s general day to day tasks. I will form a image in my mind of what I want to achieve and then build on that image over time. I generally don’t write down notes, but treat it as a mind game, as I understand how I can get the results I want on the day of the shoot.

During the shoot, I used one Quantum QFlash T2, Canon 5D, with the Canon 17-40 wide angle lens and the Canon 70-200 zoom lens. I love both of these L-Class lenses as they are super fast and respond really well in many lighting conditions. Using a couple of pocket wizards, I dial in the exposure I want and start shooting. I tend not to take 100s of images, but carefully take the ones I do take. It just cuts down the editing time later!

Christmas Card | Jovi, Tiffany & I

Tiffany and I decided, for fun, to do a silly Christmas card. Nothing serious, but creative all the same. We realized that we both have our own obsessions in life, mine being coffee and her’s being post-it notes. Actually we both love other things, but we just realized that it would be funny to emphasize those areas. In the first image, you can see Tiffany’s dog, Jovi patiently wondering what we’re up to and why he needs to sit there. I have my coffee mug and Tiffany has her post-it notes at the ready.

The second image show’s us holding two stars, with a deeper message for Christmas. Make a wish, make it at Christmas and watch the wish come true. This really is going to be a challenging year for many all over the world. Let’s make a wish now for good times in 2009.

Jovi was so good during this quick portrait session, he really pulled through and he looks so cool.

I love working with dogs, as they express exactly how they feel at that time. The older dogs have a really cool established attitude and personality. Usually responding to most requests, if they feel like it. The younger dogs are so hyper and keen to sniff everything. It’s a trip for sure!

After getting the images printed to 4×6 lustre paper, I hand made the Christmas Cards using various supplies from a local art store. The act of going through and hand making the cards felt really rewarding. There you are making cards, when there’s a million other things to do at Christmas. Sometimes, you just need to stop and do something rewarding, that isn’t off your task list.

Shane Snider’s StepUp Workshop | Folly Beach SC

I recently attended and helped out at Shane Snider’s StepUp Workshop, hosted by Juliet Jones Photography at her beach house in Folly Beach SC. There were many things I liked about this workshop from the moment I got there to the very end. The beach house was a perfect location, for a relaxed, discussion style, detailed presentation workshop. Shane covered many areas from pricing, to developing a style and photography techniques. Two guests, Punam Bean Photography, discussing destination weddings and Joe Bunn DJ Company, talking about regional networking. The group packed up and headed out for the afternoon to shoot two brides at the beautiful Lowndes Grove and the American Theater. Both locations are stunning and exactly the kind of locations I enjoy shooting at. They inspire and trigger your imaginations of times gone by. With endless composition, color, texture and lighting possibilities, I was in heaven for sure. This is exactly the kind of thing that gets me going and fired up.

The information I learned from Shane, Punam, Joe and all the other photographers who attended the workshop is priceless. This has to be one of the best workshops I’ve attended and look forward to seeing this workshop grow.

I would like to thank all those involved in getting this workshop setup, including key members at the Lowndes Grove and American Theater. It was very kind of you to let 12 photographers run around with two brides taking our images.

If you’re a photographer, I strongly recommend contacting Shane Shider to find out more about his workshops in the near future.
