I feel very fortunate to know such talented designers and even happier today when I heard that one of them had been interviewed by Cranbrook Design about her letterpress work. Yes, the talented Zida Borcich was interviewed by Cranbrook Design, an online magazine about design and letterpress. Earlier this year, I commissioned Zida to design my business card and create letterpress versions. I’m always amazed at the reaction I get from those I hand the card to. The latest I have had at several weddings this month was, “oh wow, it’s just one card!” They are stunned at the shear thickness of the card and the quality of the letterpress work.
The design of the business logo was by another talented designer Bomi Kim, a local designer to Raleigh, NC.
I was also very fortunate that Zida wrote an amazing blog entry about my business and the cards she created. When you get a moment, please check it out and review Zida’s work online.
Last month I had the pleasure to photograph Linda & Robbie’s Wedding at Magic Wings Butterfly House, which is a huge greenhouse on The Life + Science Museum, in Durham, campus. This greenhouse is filled with plants, butterflies and small birds (i.e. hummingbirds). There’s a small path that meanders around the greenhouse so you can explore the whole area.
On arriving, we were confronted by serious amounts of rainfall, much to our disappointment, as we had all planed on taking various portraits outside. No problem though, as we had arrived early to scout around the location and determine some alternative spots for creative portraits. I feel it always helps to run around a place either on the day or a few days before to get a sense of what is around. It’s a bit like skimming through a book before you read it or looking up when you walk, rather than keeping your head down. It really helps! Although I have no problem being dropped into a new location and working with it right off the bat. I thrive on adrenaline, which focuses the mind and pushes me to be creative in the most pressured situations.
After scouting around for portrait locations, we got the gear setup and immediately met up with the bride and the bridal party. The getting ready shots are always wonderful and filled with excitement. I really do enjoy the moments leading up to the walk down the aisle. There’s an energy in the atmosphere; a mixture of nerves, anticipation and happiness. I feed of this and follow my imagination to capture the moments.
We had plenty of time to get quite a number of formal portraits made before the ceremony. And capture the bride & groom meeting each other before they marry.
The ceremony was held in The Butterfly Room, with 80-120 people in the smallest of spaces. I had my camera lens planned and my positions marked out in my head. It was a squeeze, trying hard to be as distant as possible and capture the pure essence of the ceremony. With low light, due to the rainfall, the room was filled with multiple light sources. I prefer not to use a flash during the ceremony for several reasons. This is a time for the couple, where they should only notice each other and not a photographer taking their pictures. Opting for a wide open portrait lens, I caught mainly non flash images before, during and immediately after the ceremony.
Right after the ceremony, we finished up on the formals images and headed straight to the reception. Which was a tent outside, decorated in the most imaginative way possible. Seriously stunning work by the Linda Wong. The cake was equally amazing too. With butterflies all over it and very colorful.
The rain persisted all night until the very end. But, it didn’t slow this couple down as they had an amazing wedding.
This month I was asked to photograph the first ISES breakfast meeting held at the wonderful Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill, NC. The meeting this month focused on how to maximize your self image, mainly from your appearance regarding the clothes, the shoes and for women makeup, hair & ear rings. Very interesting and always a good idea to do a self check to make sure all is good in that department.
Warren McCormack Photography, based in Cary, has always been concerned about the professional image. I started with a photography style and then built the brand around it. From which, a look of how I and the staff I hire should dress. It’s the small details and being consistent that are always remembered.
The flowers and table center pieces were created & provided by Mike at Fluertations. This guy is a hard worker and somebody that sets the pace. The displays were just perfect for the occasion and the season!
Catering was provided by Carolina Inn, Chapel Hill, NC. They did a fabulous job, with an array of color and smells. A very inviting sight on a chilly morning, to eat some delicious fruit and a hot breakfast. Of course, you need to follow it by some coffee!
Letter press stationary is where it is at! It might cost a little more than what you’d expect to pay for a business card or office stationary. But the feeling, the texture and branding it conveys to those who receive it is second to none.
The studio has been extremely fortunate with two exhibitions of large 34″x22″ canvas’s from a collection of Charleston and Mexico fine art work. The first exhibition ran at Coffee and Crepes in Cary for the month of August. The opening night was part of the Cary Art Loop, where art lovers walk travel from one exhibit to the next for one night only.
The second exhibit is running for a couple of months, from the beginning of September until the end of October at the trendy Port City Java on Fayetteville St, Raleigh, NC.
Here are some images Tiffany and I took of the exhibit at Port City Java. A big super duper thank you to Tiff for getting these when I was working with the cafe owner to hang the canvas’s.
We are always looking for trendy and hip locations to do exhibitions. If you’re interested in showing some of the fine art canvas’s, please contact the studio and we’ll set up a meeting.
The collection of work can be ordered from the online gallery and shipped out.
Heading back to the car I noticed a martini glass left on the street from the night before. I thought it made quite an interesting image.
