Weddings Magazine 2010 | Mangrum Publishing

Oh wow, Robyn and Maureen at Mangrum Publishing have done it again! The new, hot of the press Weddings Magazine for 2010 looks absolutely amazing. I took delivery of the new magazine today, so the studio is now setup to hand out copies. The size of the magazine feels great to hold and read through. The way they layout the magazine, the individual sections and the print quality are very well thought out. It feels great to be amongst all of the talented photographers and vendors in the area.

This is the studio’s first year advertising with Mangrum Publishing. This is also the first year the studio was asked for an image for use in the magazine too. I’m proud to say, the twice award winning image was used as the opening section to the photographers’ ads. There’s also another image recently taken at Old Sheldon Church in Beaufort SC within an article about wedding photography.

International Aperture Awards | Two Print Awards

Wow! What a year, I’m so excited by the fact that the studio just got two more awards for two prints submitted to the Australian International Aperture Awards Print Competition. The studio received two Bronze Awards for the two prints, as they were recognized as high quality images and worthy of recognition in the competition.

Can’t wait for 2010, as it will surely rock even more – fingers & toes crossed for luck!!

Andrea, Tim & Three Dogs | Engagement

When I first met Andrea and Tim, at the studio’s Forever Bridal Show booth, they said they had a special request. Would it be possible to include their three dogs in the engagement session, as the dogs are their family. My response was, no problem at all! This will be fun I thought and definitely an interesting twist on an engagement session.

We met at Umstead State Park in Raleigh NC. Quite a cool park, as it has a lot to offer and so close to many locations in Raleigh and Durham. We found this really neat location at the far end of the park from the Glenwood Ave entrance, near to a lake and in the woods. With three dogs, I wanted to have a mix of walking/running areas, the water and use the trees. I also wanted to bring in some creative lighting and bring out their personalities too.

Ole Time Winter Festival | Portrait with Santa | December 5th 2009

December 5th 2009 marked the 4th year the studio was asked to photograph families with Santa at the Cary Ole Time Winter Festival on Academy St, in old Cary. The Heart of Cary Association works hard every year to put together the festival, to bring the community together with some of the local craft makers amongst other vendors. So that the visitors to the festival can get a good cross section of what Cary has to offer. It takes weeks of planning and they do an amazing job every year.

This year was no exception, with the difference this year that it decided to rain pretty much non stop. I started the day early, by getting to the studio’s booth location before 8 am. With the rain playing a big role on how the day would go, I felt it was vital to get the canopy up so that the booth would be dry later on for the equipment. Of which, there is rather a lot of. The booth becomes a mini studio, with a portrait area and a reviewing/printing area.

It was quite an amazing day, even though the weather was really bad, people still came out and got their portraits with Santa. I had a few people return from previous years too, which was awesome. I’m always shocked that I remember their faces, even if a few years ago. I guess I have a mind for faces, rather than names!

Drea & Brendan | Engagement

Drea, Brendan and I met in downtown Wilmington earlier this Fall at The Cotton Exchange to photograph their engagement. This has to be one of a handful of favorite locations in downtown Wilmington, as it is just oozing history and it has a lot of cool quite spots to photograph the couple. One thing I always try to do during an engagement or bridal session is to bring out the personalities in the images. An easy job you might think, but actually quite tricky. One key thing is to place a couple in a location they feel comfortable in and can be themselves. For some, it’s in the thick of a busy street and for others, it is a quite corner somewhere they know.

For these two, they are very comfortable together and their personalities soon started to reveal themselves. Having driven down to Wilmington with no rain in sight, on arriving the heavens opened up and we found ourselves in Port City Java catching up. After a cup of joe, the rain had stopped and so we decided to give it a go, rather than postponing the session. We started at the back entrance to The Cotton Exchange and no sooner than we had started, so did the rain! And it really never gave up for the entire session. An interesting element added to the mix, but no problem. We stayed under cover for the most of the session, except for the occasional dash to an exposed spot. Using just natural light, a single flash and sometimes a small video light. I found the session with the added and unexpected elements to inspire my imagination.

I can’t wait to photograph their wedding in 2010, as they are truly a fun couple to hang out with.
