Allyson & Archie | Engagement

I first introduced to Allyson & Archie by Shawn owner and lead consultant at Your Special Day Weddings and Special Events. Allyson, Shawn, Archie (via iChat from England) and myself had a detailed and fun consultation. Which is the best time to initially understand the couples wedding goals and dreams. If you are looking for one of the best wedding consultants in town, look no further, as Shawn and her team will definitely go beyond your expectations.

Allyson, Archie & myself met in downtown Wilmington January 1st 2010, the first shoot of the new year! With their move to England in a matter of days after the shoot, it was important that we meet and capture some memories in one of North Carolina’s well known coastal cities. The weather at the coast is never guaranteed, especially in the winter. This day was an exception it turned out. With any shoot, I’m constantly checking the weather reports to see what the day may bring. The afternoon’s weather went as predicted, with the rain starting at exactly 3 PM. I remember, as I was so surprised by the exactness.

We started the shoot of at the Cotton Exchange in downtown Wilmington, moving around the building to get interesting portraits of the location and their total adoration for each other. Walking a little of the way down the street to a city building.

Then off to a few locations near George’s and the walkway on the inlet. There’s some really cool distressed painted brick walls. Which as you can imagine I’m totally in to!

After covering some cool parts of downtown Wilmington, we headed over to Wrightsville beach and the huge concrete pier. The cold icy wind didn’t slow us down… much… we quickly captured some portraits on the pier and then headed down to the beach. Underneath the pier and running along the sand.

My goal for the session was to connect with the couple and for them to have a fun time. I wanted to capture a wide range of images, keeping it romantic, creative and simple.

Bayer CropScience | Celebration Day

Last summer I had the opportunity to photograph the biggest group to date, 120 people, for Bayer CropScience at the Marriott at Crabtree Valley, in Raleigh NC. With a large group there are a few things I’m thinking about:

  • Portrait location
  • Lighting
  • Ensuring everybody is looking the right way
After scouting out a slight incline for the location, with the sunlight hitting down hard, the entrance way was perfect. With some additional fill light about 12 feet up in the air pointing right down onto the group. I got the lighting I wanted. Ensuring everybody looks the right way was the next and last issue. I always say, “if you can see me clearly without obstruction, then you will be visible in the portrait”.

Fleurtations | New Studio

I had the pleasure of photographing Michaels new Fleurtations studio in North Raleigh. If you’re a bride and looking for a creative florist, please check out his website. The new studio space is very warm and inviting. I felt immediately relaxed on arriving. The furniture and layout is well thought out too. And of course the wall color scheme is something I can relate to (light blue!).

Jovi’s Adventures | Fujifilm Polaroids

I’m loving the new Fujifilm Instant Camera. Upon loading the polaroid film pack, I snapped my first image of Jovi and a bright sunny day. And of course Fujifilm lives up to it’s ability to capture vivid primary colors. Getting an instant picture created in a matter of minutes is seriously cool.

I scanned this first polaroid, tweaked the image in PS with some basic density and saturation.

Julia & Robert | Engagement

Julia, Robert and I met at Cameron Village in Raleigh. Where we first started their engagement session at the Great Outdoor Provision store, a shop that Robert worked at for many years growing up. Robert had some ideas of using a few locations in the basement of the store. Cool I thought, let’s check it out. The elevator is really old, with graffiti on the walls and dark secluded areas. Perfect for a couple to be catching a quiet moment away from the busy life upstairs. After shooting in the basement, time was of the essence, we headed over to NC State campus and took a few images in front of the bell tower. Once done there, we drove over to Fayetteville Street and parked in one of the main multi-level car decks. I had come across a location perfect for a couple. We took a few images, of the couple dancing in front of the semi-circle window over looking downtown Raleigh. To add to the story, I had the couple take a walk down Fayetteville Street, with a brief stop outside a coffee shop. I love the high rise buildings on this street, along with the history. There’s a great city feeling, which isn’t expected in downtown Raleigh.

After finishing up on Fayetteville Street, we drove straight over to Chapel Hill and walked around the University campus. We took a few images on the kissing bench and then on the steps of a beautiful building.

Once we completed the images in Chapel Hill, we drove straight over to Brightleaf Square, Durham. This is becoming one of my favorite locations, as there is so much on offer and plenty to do too.

I quite often like to have an engagement session start a few hours before sunset, just so it is possible to capture naturally warm images and then some creative images in the low light or darkness.

This was an engagement unlike any other, with many outfit changes, locations and meaning behind all those that we used. They had truly thought through all that they wanted out of the session and had a lot of fun preparing too.
